Determination for Good

“Then they said, ‘Come, let’s begin work to build ourselves a city with a lofty tower that rises into the heavens. We’ll make a name for ourselves, a monument to us, instead of being scattered all over the earth.’ But when Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower which mortals had started building, he said, ‘If they have begun this as one people sharing a common language, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.’” Genesis 11:4-6 (TPT)

The story of the Tower of Babel is often viewed as a lesson on pride and human ambition without God. However, hidden within this account is an incredible truth about the power of determination and unity.

God Himself acknowledged that when people are determined and work together toward a common goal, “nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.”

Determination is a powerful force. When directed toward good and godly purposes, it can transform lives, build communities, and advance God’s kingdom.

Just as the people of Babel were focused on their goal (even if it was misguided), we too can apply that same determination to pursuits that honor God—whether it’s growing in faith, serving others, or achieving personal goals that align with His will.

Look at Nehemiah, who was determined to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem despite opposition. Or Paul, who endured hardships yet remained steadfast in preaching the gospel. Their determination wasn’t just about personal success but about fulfilling God’s purpose.

What are you determined to accomplish? Are your efforts directed toward things that build up God’s kingdom, or are they merely for personal gain? When our determination aligns with His will, He empowers us to achieve the impossible.

Reflection:

• What is something good and meaningful that you are determined to pursue?

• How can you invite God into your plans and rely on Him for strength?

• Are there distractions or selfish motives that need to be surrendered?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for the gift of determination. Help me to use it wisely, not for selfish ambition but to glorify You. Give me the perseverance to pursue what is good and the wisdom to align my goals with Your will. May my efforts build up Your kingdom and bring You honor. Amen.
