“And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.”
I Corinthians 13:2 NKJV
In Acts 16:16–18, Paul discerned the spirit operating through the slave girl who followed them. He did not simply react emotionally; he recognized the spiritual source behind what was happening.
True discernment should ultimately bring people closer to God, not condemn them.
The purpose of spiritual gifts is to edify, help, strengthen, and build the body of Christ—not to make us feel superior to others.
DANGERS OF DISCERNMENT WITHOUT LOVE
When discernment is not properly governed by the character of Christ, it can produce:
1. Pride — believing you are spiritually superior to others.
2. Suspicion — constantly assuming that something is wrong with everyone.
3. Fear — becoming unnecessarily afraid of people, places, or situations.
4. A judgmental attitude — using discernment as an excuse to condemn people.
Child of God, discernment is not a license to judge everybody. Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom to know what you are discerning, why you are discerning it, and what God wants you to do about it.
May God give us spiritual sensitivity without suspicion, discernment without pride, and wisdom without judgment in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen
True discernment reveals the spiritual source so that we can respond according to God’s will—not so that we can condemn people.

- Give me wisdom to respond with love, humility, and truth.
- Deliver me from pride, suspicion, fear, and a judgmental spirit.
- Let every spiritual gift in my life bring glory to You and be a blessing to others. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
