Don’t Die Like a Fool

“The king sang this song about Abner’s death: ‘Abner, you should not have died like a fool.’” (2 Samuel 3:33, EASY)

Abner was a great warrior and a man of influence, yet he died a foolish death. Why? He let his guard down. He trusted the wrong person at the wrong time. Joab, pretending to seek peace, deceived Abner and killed him in secret vengeance.

David lamented his death, recognizing that Abner’s downfall was not due to weakness but to carelessness.

Like Abner, we can be strong in many ways—wise in business, successful in relationships, respected in our communities—yet still make foolish choices that lead to spiritual, emotional, or even physical destruction.

Foolishness isn’t just ignorance; it’s often a result of misplaced trust, pride, or ignoring warnings from God.

Are there areas in your life where you are letting your guard down? Are you trusting in the wrong people or neglecting the wisdom of God? The enemy loves to deceive and attack when we least expect it.

But God calls us to walk in wisdom:

• Guard your heart (Proverbs 4:23).

• Seek godly counsel (Proverbs 11:14).

• Trust in the Lord, not just your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Abner had the opportunity to align himself fully with God’s plan under David’s kingship, but his missteps cost him everything. Let’s not repeat his mistake. Stay alert, stay prayerful, and walk in God’s wisdom so that your life reflects His glory, not foolish regret.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to walk in wisdom and discernment. Guard my heart from deception and my steps from foolish choices. Let me trust in You completely and align my life with Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
