“Jesus answered, “At that time deception will run rampant. So beware that you’re not fooled! For many will appear on the scene claiming my authority or saying about themselves, ‘I am God’s Anointed,’ and they will lead many astray.”
Mark 13:5-6 TPT
Heresy is a belief or opinion contrary to the word of God. In Titus 3:10 a “heretical person” is one who follows his own self-willed “questions,” and who is to be avoided. Heresies thus came to signify self-chosen doctrines not emanating from God ( 2 Peter 2:1 ).
“For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine and accurate instruction [that challenges them with God’s truth]; but wanting to have their ears tickled [with something pleasing], they will accumulate for themselves [many] teachers [one after another, chosen] to satisfy their own desires and to support the errors they hold, and will turn their ears away from the truth and will wander off into myths and man-made fictions [and will accept the unacceptable].”
2 Timothy 4:3-4 AMP
Here are some of the Heresies that are creeping into the church:
- Once saved, forever saved; the Bible says in Philippians 2:12-13 paraphrased “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure”, it is an instruction to work on your salvation, if not, you lose it.
- Christians will be healthy and wealthy; the Bible never promises a life of ease and fortune to those who are faithful and a life of difficulty and pain to those who are unfaithful (Matt6:19-24).
- Good People Go to Heaven; this is the idea that as long as you try your best to be a good person, you will end up in heaven. The Bible teaches that God’s standard to getting to heaven is holiness and perfection. Rather than trying to make our good outweigh our bad, the Bible teaches that we need to be forgiven of our sins and made holy by God through putting our faith in Jesus Christ, whose death on the cross cleanses anyone who puts their trust in him for salvation. (Romans3:21-23).
- Jesus is not the only way to God; “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6 NKJV. It is not an option, it “the” only way.
- Holy Spirit is not God; “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy [every evil, abusive, injurious speaking, or indignity against sacred things] will be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the [Holy] Spirit will not be forgiven.” Matthew 12:31 AMP
To avoid being misled by some of these heresies; read, study and meditate on the word of God. Pray for revelational knowledge of the word as you read and also ask for the gift of discernment.
PRAYER
Say; Father, have mercy on me, in any way I have believed and even promoted heresy. I ask and receive the revelational knowledge as I read, study and meditate your word in Jesus name. Amen.
