Holy Spirit Teaches Us to Pray Effectively

“And in a similar way, the Holy Spirit takes hold of us in our human frailty to empower us in our weakness. For example, at times we don’t even know how to pray or know the best things to ask for. But the Holy Spirit rises up within us to super-intercede on our behalf, pleading to God with emotional sighs too deep for words.” — Romans 8:26 TPT

We will start today’s teaching with an analogy. Two people came to meet Mr. Dee for help. They both presented their case, but only one of them received what he requested while the other did not.

The reason was that one presented his request with wisdom, carefully chosen words, and respect, while the other came rumbling, complaining with loose words that even made Mr. Dee angry and caused him to send the person away.

Mr. Dee in our analogy represents God. This is similar to how many people approach Him in prayer, asking for one thing or another, yet they do not receive answers because they are praying amiss—praying the wrong way.

The problem many believers have in prayer is not that they don’t know what to pray about, but rather how to present their prayers in a way that draws God’s attention and brings swift answers from heaven.

Having a long list of prayer points does not mean you actually know how to pray. As our opening text shows, it is the Holy Spirit who teaches us HOW we ought to pray.

The Holy Spirit aligns your will with God’s will. He positions your heart so that your motive for asking is the right one. Some people pray with wrong motives, and because we’ve been taught to “keep praying until we see results,” they continue praying on an issue that God will not answer because the motive is wrong.

If you don’t know how to pray in the Holy Ghost, pray earnestly for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. And if you are already baptized, always ask for the help of the Holy Spirit to pray prevailing prayers.

You have been praying in your own understanding for a long time without results—why not pray in the Holy Ghost?
