“And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.” — 1 John 5:20 (NKJV)
There is a deep longing in every human heart to know what is real—what is solid, trustworthy, and unchanging. In a world full of shifting values, uncertain futures, and countless voices claiming truth, John reminds us of something gloriously simple and eternally secure: Truth is not merely something to learn; Truth is Someone to know.
John says, “The Son of God has come.”
This is the heart of the gospel. Jesus did not wait for us to climb our way toward understanding. He came down to us, stepped into our world, and opened our eyes. Understanding is not something we discover on our own—it is something Jesus gives.
Through Christ, we are brought to know “Him who is true.” This means:
• We are no longer lost in confusion.
• We are no longer searching for identity or purpose in fragile places.
• We no longer have to question who God is or what He is like.
Jesus reveals the Father perfectly. To know Jesus is to know the Truth. But the verse goes even deeper: “And we are in Him who is true.”
This is more than knowledge—this is union. We are in Christ.
His life becomes our life.
His truth becomes our truth.
His victory becomes our victory.
And then John brings it all home: “This is the true God and eternal life.”
Eternal life is not just a promise for the future—it is a present reality, wrapped up in the person of Jesus. Eternal life begins the moment we step into relationship with Him.
It is knowing Him, walking with Him, and being held by Him who is true, today and forever. Amen
