Reflect on Your Desires.

“And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” Genesis 3:6 KJV.

We are all familiar with the story of Eve being deceived by the Devil (Genesis 3:13). But today, let’s closely examine how this sin was conceived and eventually brought to life.

Earlier in Genesis chapter 3, we see the serpent, representing the Devil, engaging in a conversation with Eve about the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. While talking with the Devil was not itself a sin, it set the stage for what would follow.

In verse 6, our focus today, the Bible says, “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes.” The first step toward her disobedience was that “she saw.” The tree had always been there, but after being convinced by the Serpent, she saw it in a new light—she saw that it was good for food.

Now, ask yourself, what are the things you see that lead you to disobey God? What has God instructed you to avoid, but because the Devil has convinced you, you find yourself saying, “Let me just see what this is all about,” and in the process, you disobey God?

“A tree to be desired to make one wise.” After seeing that it was good for food, she went a step further and desired the fruit. Believer, guard your desires. Whatever they may be, ensure they align with God’s will for your life. Sometimes, our desires materialize even without prayer, simply because we crave them. That’s why it’s important to pray over your desires.

She took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband.” After seeing that the tree was good for food, desiring it, and having it right in front of her, she took it and ate.

When you lose control of your desires and give in to the flesh, you disobey God and are likely to fall. It may not stop with just you; it could lead others into disobedience as well. After Eve ate the forbidden fruit, she gave some to her husband, and he ate too.

“Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.” James 1:13-14 NKJV

From this, we can infer that Eve was easily deceived by the Serpent because she had already harbored the desire to taste the forbidden fruit.

Pray: Father, may my desires never lead to my downfall. Holy Spirit, help me to keep my desires aligned with God’s will at all times, in Jesus’ name.
