Spiritual Gifts- Prophecy

“Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.” — 1 Corinthians 14:1–3 (NKJV)

The Apostle Paul begins this chapter with two guiding principles for the Christian life: pursue love and desire spiritual gifts. Notice the order—love comes first. Without love, even the most extraordinary spiritual gifts lose their meaning (1 Corinthians 13). Love is the soil in which the gifts grow and the goal toward which they aim.

Yet Paul highlights one gift in particular: prophecy. Unlike tongues, which build up the individual in private communion with God, prophecy is a gift that blesses others. It is the Spirit speaking through us to edify, exhort, and comfort those around us. In other words, prophecy brings God’s truth, encouragement, and reassurance into the lives of His people.

Edification strengthens faith. Prophecy points us back to God’s promises when doubt creeps in.

Exhortation stirs action. It awakens us when we are weary or complacent and urges us to keep walking with Christ.

Comfort soothes the soul. It reminds us of God’s nearness in seasons of pain, loss, or confusion.

In a world hungry for hope and truth, the prophetic voice of the church is vital. God doesn’t call us to keep our faith tucked away in private mysteries alone—He calls us to speak His words of life so others may be built up in Him.

Ask yourself this questions; Am I pursuing love first in all things, or have I been chasing after gifts without love as my foundation? Do I value the gifts that bless others as much as the gifts that bless me personally?

Prayer:

Lord, help me to pursue love above all things. Thank You for the gifts of Your Spirit, and especially the gift of prophecy that builds others up. Use my words to bring strength, encouragement, and comfort to those who need to hear Your voice. Let my life be a reflection of Your love and truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
