Genesis 37:26-27 KJV
[26] And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?
[27] Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.
Judah was the one that Jacob handed over the promise and covenant to. You may assume that Judah was a perfect child and good elder brother all the while, that was not the case.
Joseph started to share his dreams with his brothers and they got very angry. One day, they saw him coming and decided to kill him.
Judah did not want Joseph to be killed. The reason why Judah did not want him killed was not because he loved Joseph or he did not want him to die, he was a business man. In his thinking, he is saying, why should Joseph just die like that when we can sell him? There was nothing to gain from his brothers death so he decided to sell him. This way, he gets rid of him and makes money at the same time.
This was the old Judah, the one who could sacrifice even his brother for money. When God worked on him, he moved from selling his brother as a slave to offering himself as a slave
Genesis 44:33 KJV
[33] Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.
Joseph wanted to seize Benjamin. He had put his silver cup in his bag. He insisted that Benjamin becomes his slave for taking the cup. But we see Judah step in, offering himself as a slave. Standing in the gap and deciding to bear the consequence for Benjamin.
This is what the Lord wants us to do as a family. Stand in the gap, take the bullets and defend our brothers and sisters!
