“O Lord, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot.” — Psalm 16:5 (NKJV)
Inheritance is something we usually think of as future—something passed down, something earned, something we hope will secure us. David reframes that idea entirely. He declares that the Lord Himself is his inheritance. Not land. Not status. Not wealth. God.
To say “You are the portion of my inheritance” is to confess that nothing God gives can ever compare to God Himself. David is saying, “Even if I receive nothing else, I am fully rich because I have You.” This kind of faith loosens our grip on temporary things and anchors our hearts in what cannot be lost.
David continues, “You are my cup.” In Scripture, the cup often represents what God assigns—our experiences, blessings, and even our trials. By calling the Lord his cup, David accepts his life as something handed to him by a faithful God. The cup may not always be full of sweetness, but it is always measured by a loving hand.
Then comes the quiet confidence of the final line: “You maintain my lot.” David rests in the truth that God is not distant or passive. The Lord actively guards, sustains, and oversees what has been entrusted to His child. What God assigns, He also preserves. What He promises, He upholds.
This verse invites us into a deeper rest. We are not responsible for securing our future, proving our worth, or controlling every outcome. When the Lord is our portion, we lack nothing that truly matters. When He maintains our lot, we can walk forward without fear.
Prayer:
Lord, You are my portion and my cup. Teach my heart to desire You above all else. Help me trust that You are maintaining my life, my future, and every detail I place in Your hands. I choose to rest in You today in Jesus’ name. Amen.
